The pig's head is very symbolic in "The Lord of the Flies". It is a symbol of the fine line between fact and fiction; fiction and fantasy. But not only that, it is also a symbol of chaos and evil. The pig's head is also known as the Lord of the Flies. The pig's head itself said that it was the beast. It is a symbol of the fight for power between Ralph and Jack, for it is the head of a dead pig that Jack had hunted, while Ralph had only focused on the fire. It is one of the reasons that Jack had come into power and brought chaos to their civilization in the island.
It is not simply a pig's head, it is the Lord of the Flies.

I agree with Sergio that the pig’s head is the Lord of the Flies. He is the one who brings chaos and evil not only to Jack and Ralph but for all the kids. The kids become very scared, which causes them to be violent so they can protect themselves.

The pigs head, when I think of it, symbolizes the savagery and loss of who the boys used to be.
It is a very savage move to make, jamming a sow's head on a stick, and some how it strikes me as sexist, but then again it was going to have to be male or female anyway.
Also, I don't think most British school boys think about decapitating a sow and ramming a stick throught her head. So its also a sign that they are no longer those innocent school boys.

I agree with everyone's comments on this topic so far. I think that the pig's head is the Lord of the Flies. It represents the savagery and the lost of the boys' innocent that developed during their "stay" in the island.

The symbolic meaning of the pig´s head is Chaos and Evil. The Lord of the Flies represents the bad deeds and thoughts that the kids do in the island. How they lose their innocence and kill a pig to make the Lord of the Flies, the death of Piggy and of Simon and when Ralph sees it he throws it to the ground because he knows that the sows head is the reason that everything went wrong.
The devil in each and every one of them.

I agree with Mary. The Lord of the Flies represent the growing fear and evil growing inside of the boys on the island. It also represents the fatal mistakes the boys have made while on the island.

The symbolic importance of the pig’s head was the representation of the devil and killing. It also portrayed the savagery that had every boy in the island. A way that it showed its evil was when it talked – actually an hallucination – to Simon and started to say evil things to him – that he was going to have “fun”. Another way that the pig’s head showed evil was the hunters – when they killed. Basically it portrayed a Satan figure that showed the beast that sleeps within each human being.
