Simon's Death

Why did the boys consider Simon to be an animal as they made him their prey?

The boys considered Simon to be an animal as they made him their pray because they thought Simon was the beastie. The boys were scared of loosing their life, so they attacked and the beast inside them, as Simon said, was revealed. Even after Simon death, the kids believed that the beastie was able to change into any form and attack anytime.

The boys were having too much fun. As said in the Matrix, denial is the most predictable of human responses. Every last boy on the island was becoming a monster and no one could do anything about it. The only shred of innocence and neutrality was Simon, so the boys considered him to be an outcast and a loner, much like the beast itself. Instead of accepting the way that violence was conquering them, they denied it and ad to make an enemy to further push their argument. Simon was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so they started a sort of blame game and made him the beast, rather than own up to their blunders.

The boys executed Simon for selfish and egocentric reasons. They wanted to cure their inner fear by destroying Simon, which was thought to be the "beast" that could harm them. Many of them encountered reason in his death because they were confident that they must overcome him in order to survive.

I agree with Nathan and Ahra and disagree with Hadar. The boys considered Simon to be an animal as they made him their prey because they thought Simon was the beast. They were having too much fun and lost control over what they were doing. But, they did not kill Simon because the boys are egocentric and selfishness. It was a mistake and partially Simon's fault. He came runing down the hill like a mad cow.

They considered Simon to be an animal because of their blood-thirsty chant. This was the main reason that Simon was killed and also because of how he crawled down the side of the hill like he did.

The boy's considered Simon to be an animal and they mocked him because he was their prey. Simon became the prey slowly because of his shyness and awkwardness in front of the boys, showing a bit of the weakness. On the island, the boys group up to become survival of the fittest, and anyone who becomes the outcast becomes the person who is mocked of. Since Simon was a loner, he became the outcast. He was exceptionally a great character as a smart and honest truth-seeker. But the boys were blinded altogether as a group, they hunted and killed their "prey".

The way that Simon approached the boys was quite animal like. I would've been scared as well. And when there was talk of a beastie and such, they were sort of like "it's weird, it's scarey, i can't see what it is" and then they get scared and then they start attacking, out of fear mainly i suppose.
Although i also think some of the boys decided he was an animal so that they wouldn't feel as bad about killing him. Because they were so caught up in their ritual and being savage, they lashed out at something weak and different. But if it was just and animal, so what, its not like he was a boy with a life ahead of him or anything right? its a shortcut around a guilt trip.

I seem to agree with Nathan and Ahra. The boys considered Simon to be an animal as they made him their prey therefore each and every one of them thought Simon was the beast. Too much fun and too much freedom made them lose control of what they were doing.

Because they during a trance type of state. It was during the dance, there was rain, thunder and it was dark. The boys were excited. Then Simon came crawling out of the jungle so everyone got scared and though it was the beast.

The kids, in chapter 10, are doing their ritual dance in the storm and during the dark. That is why they got confused, like Armando said, in sort of like a trance because they were so in to it by the energy caused among the kids who were dancing that even Ralph and Piggy joined in. That is why when they saw Simon come out of the dark, the kids who were dancing and were like in a trance of their owned minds, they thought they were seeing the beast when it was only Simon.

I do not think the boys were trully scared maybe only at the first glance they had, but if they had trully been afraid they would've run instead of confronted it. They are still little scardey cats.
The boys consider Simon to be an animal and their prey, not only because they were consumed in the trancelike dance and chant, but because from were did the chant originate? "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill the blood!" The fisr time the chant was sung was when they hunted pig for the fisrt time and if I remember clearly everytime they chanted this it was when they went hunting or after they hunted and were returning with their prey. So this time when they were singing it they weren't only carried away by the exitment of the moment, but they wanted to follow the chant's tradition and hunt something. "Roger ceased to be a pig and became a hunter, so that the center of the ring yawned emptily" (152).

I agree with Ahra. Simon was considered prey because they boys thought he was the beastie. The boys believed they were protecting themselves against the beastie and had know idea it was Simon.

It was late at night, and all the energy the boys had just recieved from eating meat made them jumpy and energetic. The fact that they were shouting their chant, did not help either.
When Simon suddenly ran down the hill towards the shore, the kids thought of the beast. Their fear and savagery lead them to attack Simon, killing him.

The boys thought of Simon as the animal and prey, because like hanggi said, he came running down the hill like a mad cow. Also the boys were really distracted and more focused on the fun feast and dance. I don't think it was Simon's fault on coming down the island like that. He was really exited and he didn't know what awaited him, and the boys didn't know what awaited them. They were so distracted, that they thougt Simon was the beastie - the parachut on his back didn't make himself distinguish on who he actually was.

Nathan said as i would have.
Human nature was consuming all of the boys except Simon and so he was a loner and he was the best one to pick on because of that.
The instinct of survival of the fittest also takes over the human mind and as natural selection takes place, then all the weak get left behind as the strong move on. Simon was the weak one in this case and so it was just bound to happen. There is no explanation to it.
